The Sandbox is Safer Than Your Child’s Bathtub
How confusing it must be for parents when confronted with the multisyllabic chemical compounds in ingredients lists? Our children are exposed to thousands of chemicals in most of their bath products everyday, and it is surprising that the FDA does not require safety testing on personal care product ingredients. Which means that many we are at the mercy of the many companies that are free to use whatever marketing they choose without having to show proof of it’s safety to consumers. They target children with commercialized characters on the outside of the bottle while the actual cleansing products are damaging our children’s health.
The Environmental Working Group (EWG) study released in 2007 revealed that, on average, children are exposed to 60 chemicals daily via personal care products. Of those, 27 have never been assessed by the government for safety. Another study conducted by the EWG showed that 35 percent of products labeled natural contained artificial chemical preservatives,
and 80 percent of products described as “gentle,” “soothing,” or “hypoallergenic” contained ingredients linked to allergies and skin irritation, and hiding much more toxic chemicals in the word fragrance. And because the fragrance formulas are considered proprietary, meaning that the detail ingredients are not a requirement to be listed on product labels, chemicals like phthalates exists in these products that have been linked to reproductive problems. This can be found in many baby shampoos, lotions and powders.
David Steinman, author of Safe Trip to Eden Thunder's Mouth, 2007, tested many of the children’s bath products that are in our stores for toxicity and found that many mainstream brands contained the contaminant 1,4-dioxane, a cancer-causing petrochemical. And because it's a byproduct, 1,4-dioxane doesn't appear in the ingredients. “Consumers have no way of knowing,” says Steinman.
So What are Parents to do?
You'll be relieved to learn that there are plenty of safe products out there, if you know what to look for. I would suggested doing some research safe on brands and look for products that don’t contain chemicals. In addition, choose products that are fragrance-free and try to choose products that are organic. Moo Sang & Co. offers many products including Key’s Soaps and Hairy Kids that are clean and safe for the whole family to use.
